3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” (2 Peter 3:3-4)
Peter addressed those who disbelieved in God’s judgement and the return of Jesus as “scoffers”.
“Scoffers” – those who speak derisively, mock, jeer, and deride.
Interestingly the direct opposites of “scoffers” are people who believe, praise and worship the Lord and keep with good faith the teachings of Jesus.
The “scoffers” Peter was trying to address and identify were not just the usual non-believers or those who have yet to believe in Jesus and God’s salvation plan. But those who had once believed but turned away from their faith due to reasons like willful sinning and marginalizing God’s judgement.
Peter warned that these “scoffers” are “following their own sinful desires”. Which can be understood to mean these “scoffers do not give priority to the will of God, do not respect the final authority of God, do not fear God, and surely have none concern about God’s judgement.
So what are they concern about? What do they care about? – “their own sinful desires”, and to the extent of mocking and jeering at the judgement of God
People being people, very often we do have the tendency to recognized “judgement” when it happens. But in truth and reality when we are looking at “judgement” unfolding before our eyes, that is actually the final stage of “judgement”.
So when did “judgement” start?
If there is a starting point for the judgement of God, surely God will show it to us. Indeed as according to the words and commandments of God, there is a starting point for judgement.
When God declared it, when God pronounced His judgement, when God said it, that’s when it all started.
14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Genesis 3:14-19)
What God declared as recorded in Genesis 3 was the beginning of judgement for Mankind, the serpent, and the earth. Right after Man fell into sin, the judgement of God had been declared and unfolding.
When Jesus was preaching and teaching among the Jews as recorded in the Gospels, Jesus declared judgement on this earth and humanity as according to the authority God the Father gave to Him –
31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (John 12:31-32)
47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. (John 12:47-49)
Jesus made it plain and clear how we will be judged. Jesus also made it plain and clear that this world, this earth we are living on had been subjected to judgement.
In fact all of humanity till today we are still being confined to this “declared judgement” as according to the words of Jesus. The only escape is of course through Jesus.
Therefore it is no surprise in these last days there will be even more attack and mockery against Jesus, against Jesus’ teaching, against Jesus’ commandments. The enemy of Jesus will do everything and anything to attack and challenge the credibility of Jesus, and eventually marginalize the commandments and teachings of Jesus.
True disciples of Jesus will know, the words of Jesus are final authority for our life both here on earth and beyond death to eternity.
Therefore it is no surprise in these last days true disciples of Jesus will be subjected to attack and mockery. Like in the days of the Gospels, whatever Judas and the chief priests did to Jesus, people will do the same to true disciples of Jesus.
Jesus being the word of God, He represented the final authority of God.
True disciples of Jesus who follow Jesus are living witness and testimony that the word of God is final authority. Therefore the enemy will attack everything and anything associated with the words of Jesus.
For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? (1 Peter 4:17)
Whatever is happening around us is a wake-up call, perhaps a final wake-up call before the return of Jesus.
