13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. (Jeremiah 2:13)
Back in the days of Jeremiah, the people of God had done foolish things and continued in their own foolishness.
What were the foolish acts they committed?
Forsaken their true Savior and Lord who brought them out of slavery, gave them true blessings and freedom … furthermore “.. hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water ..”
In other words, they had turned away from the true living God who has the real power to bless them and went after false gods who cannot saves cannot help cannot heal them!
In a way they were destroying their own future, destroying their own blessings which they were to receive of the Lord.
What was it that was happening in the lives of the people that has come to such foolish acts?
The people of God were told to be diligent to observe the ways and commandment of the Lord. But they had fallen into spiritual lethargy.
When Joshua lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land, all the foreign gods and practices which they destroyed as according to the commandments of God … found their way back among the practices of the children of Israel.
The people of God neglected to observe the ways and commandments of God.
Fast forward to the New Testament church …
The Apostle Peter warned us Christians against “spiritual lethargy“.
Our Christian walk is to walk in the newness of life Jesus provided for us.
Transformation and renewal of life is the result of being born again through Jesus.
But “spiritual lethargy” can draws us back to the old ways.
“Spiritual lethargy” is a major cause of lack of spiritual growth!
The Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the Galatians warned against “another Gospel” … which is a form of “spiritual corruption and deception”
“Spiritual corruption and deception” comes in various forms and the end game is to divert us away from the truth of Jesus.
Our best defense is to stick to the truth …
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)
Our ultimate goal in Christianity is eternal life with Jesus.
All forms of “spiritual corruption and deception” eventually rob us of our goal towards eternal life.
Christians need to be warned of such a thing as “apostasy”
Looking at our modern days churches, we need to guard against these …
Our best defense is to be diligent in observing the truth of Jesus.
We need to guard ourselves against “spiritual corruption and deception” which divert and draw us away from our love and fear of the Lord.
“(Jesus said) … teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
We need to pay attention to what Jesus actually taught us.
We need to be diligent about what Jesus actually said and taught.
We need to have an active structured organized discipleship program to teach, to promote, to continue what Jesus wanted us to continues …
